​Foreign Merchandise Trade Balance. In 2016, Qatar recorded a merchandise trade balance surplus (the difference between total exports and imports) of QR 91.9billion (revised), down from QR 162.6 billion in 2015.


Total Exports: In 2016, the value of Qatar total exports (including exports of domestic goods and re-exports) amounted to QR 208.6 billion (revised), decreased by QR 72.7 billion (25.8%) compared to 2015 total exports of QR 281.3billion .

  • The 2016 year on year (Y-o-Y) decrease in total exports was mainly due to lower exports of Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by (QR 64.6 billion), Chemicals and related products n.e.s. by material (QR 5.3 billion); Manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (QR 1.4 billion); Machinery and transport equipment (manly re-exports, QR 1.0 billion), and Crude materials, inedible, except fuels (QR 0.2 billion) on the other hand, increases occurred in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (QR 0.1 billion).
     
    Imports: The value of Qatar imports in 2016 was QR 116.7 billion, decreased by QR 2.0 billion (1.7%) compared to 2015 imports of QR 118.7 billion.

  • The 2016 year-on-year decrease in imports reflected decreases mainly in Machinery and transport equipment (QR 2.1 billion), Manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (QR 1.8 billion), Crude materials, inedible, except fuels (QR 0.9 billion); Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by (QR 0.3 billion),and Food and live animals (QR 0.2 billion). on the other hand, increases occurred in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (QR 3.6 billion), and Chemicals and related products n.e.s. by (QR 0.1 billion) .
    Major Export/Import Partners: During 2016, Asia was the principal destination of Qatar’s exports and the first origin of Qatar’s imports, representing 72.7% and 30.7% respectively, followed by the European Union, accounting for 10.0% and 33.1% respectively, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, with 9.2% and 16.1% respectively.
