The Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of August 2022. The CPI of August 2022 reached to 103.78 points showing increase by 0.13% when compared to CPI of July 2022. Compared to CPI of August 2021, [Y-o-Y basis], an increase of 4.80% has been recorded in the general index (CPI) of this month.
When comparing the main components of CPI for the month of August 2022, with the previous month July 2022 (Monthly change), it is found that there was an increase in five groups, four groups was decreased, three groups remained unchanged.
The groups showed increase as a follow: “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” by 2.61%, “Food and Beverages” by 2.16%, “Clothing and Footwear” by 0.43%, “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” by 0.11%, “Education” by 0.5%.
A decrease has been recorded on four main groups namely: “Recreation and Culture” by 4.33%, “Transport” by 1.00%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 0.19%, “Furniture and Household Equipment” and 0.09%. “Tobacco”, “Health”, and “Communication” had remained flat at the last month’s price level.
A comparison of the CPI, August 2022 with the CPI, August 2021 (Annual Change), an increase has been recorded in the general index (CPI), by 4.80%. This [Y-o-Y] price increase primary due to the prices rising in eight groups namely: “Recreation and Culture” by 27.88%, followed by “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” by 8.75%, “Food and Beverages” by 5.77%, “Clothing and Footwear” by 2.24%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 1.49%, “Furniture and Household Equipment” by 1.39%, “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” by 0.36%, “Education” by 0.31%.
A decrease has been shown in price levels in “Health” by 3.38%, “Transport” by 3.2%, and “Communication” by 1.24%. No changes recorded on “Tobacco”.
The CPI of August 2022 excluding “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” group stands at 106.14 points recorded decrease by 0.46%, when compared to the index of July 2022. Compared with counterpart in 2021, the CPI of August index increased by 3.89%.
