The Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of April 2022. The CPI of April 2022 reached to 101.77 points showing an increase by 0.29% when compared to CPI of March 2022. Compared to CPI of April 2021, [Y-o-Y basis], an increase of 4.66% has been recorded in the general index (CPI) of this month. 

 

An analysis [on M-o-M basis] of CPI for April 2022 compared with CPI, March 2022, showed that there were five main groups, where respective indices in this month have increased, namely: “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” by 1.66%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 1.57%, “Clothing and Footwear” by 1.28%, “Furniture and Household Equipment” by 1.21%, and   “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” by 0.94%. 

A decrease has been recorded on “Communication” by 1.04%, “Food and Beverages” by 0.83%, “Transport” by 0.45%, “Recreation and Culture” by 0.19%, and “Health” by 0.05%. “Tobacco”, and “Education” had remained flat at the last month’s price level.

A comparison of the CPI, April 2022 with the CPI, April 2021 (Annual Change), an increase has been recorded in the general index (CPI), by 4.66%. This [Y-o-Y] price increase primary due to the prices rising in eight groups namely: “Recreation and Culture” by 35.25%, followed by “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” by 5.49%, “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” by 3.75%, “Food and Beverages” by 3.59%, “Clothing and Footwear” by 2.44%. “Furniture and Household Equipment” by 1.40%, “Education” by 0.42%, and “Transport” by 0.15%. 

A decrease has been shown in price levels in “Health” by 3.14%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 0.98%, and “Communication” by 0.64%. No changes recorded on “Tobacco”. 

The CPI of April 2022 excluding “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” group stands at 104.51 points recorded an increase by 0.14%, when compared to the index of March 2022. Compared with counterpart in 2021, the CPI of April index increased by 4.88%.
