Youths Were the Largest Group Involved in Traffic Accidents in 2012
On the occasion of GCC Traffic Week under the motto: “Your Safety Is Our Goal,” which continues up to 15th March 2012, QSA has issued a press statement throwing light on the major statistical data related to traffic accidents in the State of Qatar in 2012.   Statistics show that there was an increase in traffic accidents in 2012, which numbered 5027, a 10% increase compared with 2011. The 204 deaths resulting from such accidents, however, dropped by 0.5% compared with 2011.   The percentage of killed drivers was 35.3%, while that of killed passengers was 37.3% and that of pedestrians was 27.4%. It is noted that there was a decrease in the number of killed pedestrians by 13.5% compared with last year. As for the age groups of those who are involved in traffic accidents, the percentage of the 18-35 age-groups was 67.5% of the total number of those involved in traffic accidents.     The percentage of fatal traffic accidents out of total deaths in Qatar was 17.2%. The authorities concerned are seeking to reduce the fatal traffic accidents percentage to 10% out of total deaths in 2016. Increasing fatal traffic accidents and those leading to casualties have a negative impact on society in family and economic terms. Therefore, the State of Qatar has worked out strategic indicators for traffic safety between 2011 and 2016 aimed at reducing the proportion of serious accidents from 300 – 250 per one hundred thousand people in 2016, and thus reducing the average annual fatal traffic cases to 10, reducing that of major accidents from 300 to 250 per 100 thousand of the population in 2016, thus reducing annual fatal traffic accidents to 10 cases and reducing the percentage of pedestrians deaths according to the world standard, which is 17%. The most important factor is to reduce the percentage of fatal traffic accidents in 2016 to a0% of the total deaths in Qatar. It is worth mentioning that there have been achievements in traffic safety indicators. The average ratio of deaths per 100,000 dropped to 9 deaths in 2012, a change of 8.1%. In addition, the index of accidents severity dropped to 9.5% in 2012.
