The findings of this report are based on the data of the “Time Use Survey”, which was conducted for the first time in Qatar over a year from September 20, 2012 to September 19, 2013. The survey sample accounts for 16574 household individuals divided into two samples; the first consists of 7453 Qataris, and the second of 9121 non-Qataris.
The survey focuses on the activities carried out by individuals (of 15 years and over) during the day (24 hours), including indoor and outdoor activities. The activities types and their duration is important for social and economic analysis such as the economic contribution of women, value of domestic production, informal sector, and time used in recreational and cultural activities. We will display three methods to measure the time use: 1. Percentage of individuals engaged in activities: It refers to the number of individuals engaged in activities out of the total respondents. In terms of Sex, 49% of Qatari men and 28% of women are engaged in income-generating activities, according to the survey result. The survey shows that 68% of Qatari men spend time on household, business and shopping activities, compared to 81% of Qatari women. As for education and learning activities, the survey result show that 14% of Qatari men and 15% for Qatari women spend time in such activities. 3. Average time used by Qatari nationals engaged in the income-generating activity attained 8 hours and 13 minutes, and 7 hours and 27 minutes for males and females respectively. Average time allocated for household and shopping activities for Qatari females (4 hours and 4 minutes) is much larger than for Qatari males (2 hours and 41 minutes).
